Copper Cathode Contamination by Nickel in Copper Electrorefining

Nickel behavior has a significant role in the electrorefining of copper, and although it been extensively studied from anode electrolyte point view over past decades, studies on nickel contamination at cathode are limited. In current paper, three possible mechanisms—particle entrapment, inclusions co-electrodeposition—were investigated. Copper (Cu-ER) was conducted laboratory scale, cathodes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) flame atomic absorption (AAS). Particle entrapment adding NiO Fe2O3 to system simulate slime, experiments replicated industrial slime material. The possibility due nodulation explored through addition graphite produce nodules cathode. Co-electrodeposition that utilized Hull cell. results indicate particle can occur is major source Cu-ER, whereas compounds not shown promote nodulation. Inclusions bulk electrolytes within surface matrix observed, proving possible. As co-electrodeposition Ni Cu-ER thermodynamically unlikely, these experimental also verify does any extent.
